Structural Renovation of the Lateral Connection

JANSSEN TECHNOLOGY SCORES ANOTHER SUCCESS
WSSC Pilot Project Completed in April

April 2009

During two and a half weeks in April 2009, 41 laterals in the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) service area were successfully renovated with the Janssen Lateral Sealing technology. WSSC is the countries 8th largest water and sewer municipal agency serving 1.8 million residents through over 5,400 miles of sewer pipe.

Reynolds Inliner, working with the assistance of operations specialists from Germany, supplied the equipment for the pilot project. Reynolds became a licensee for the Janssen system in February. Janssen GmbH designs and manufactures the robotic technology from their headquarters in Goch, Germany.

All of the 8" sewer mains in the project had been relined within the past 5 years with CIPP liners. Engineers with WSSC's Wastewater Collection System Group selected lateral connections for sealing for Janssen sealing to confirm viability of the resin's effectiveness under a variety of conditions. Degrade Wy's and T's were earmarked for repair across several neighborhoods in the WSSC service area from Silver Spring to Wheaton.

Within WSSC's service areas, many laterals enter the mainline from acute angles rather than the more traditional "t" angle. Acutely angled lateral connections are a challenge to most lateral repair technologies. The advantage Janssen's rubber componsite lateral bladder is its flexibility to extend into the lateral pipe at severe angles. A half dozen laterals in the Pilot Project presented acute angles which were all successfully sealed.

"We were pleased with the performance of the Janssen system," commented Don Barnhart, with the Janssen Process Company. "Each neighborhood presented different conditions allowing us to demonstrate Janssen's versatility to WSSC," he added. Bedding and soil variations surrounding pipes were significant. Crews encountered large rock or stone back fill, small voids and tightly compacted soils as well.

Janssen sealing technology has been added to WSSC's specifications as an approved technology. Reynolds Inliner has been awarded contracts by WSSC to provide Janssen sealing and will deploy and operate Janssen equipment from their College Park, MD office.
